Inspired by playwright Tarell McCraney's interest in Yoruban mythology and his own childhood growing up in housing projects in Miami, The Brother/Sister Plays is a trilogy of works that have earned McCraney a reputation as one of the most exciting playwrights in a new generation. The Brothers Size is the second play in that trilogy. And while the plays stand alone—you don’t need any knowledge of the first ( In the Red and Brown Water) or third ( Marcus; or the Secret of Sweet) to enjoy The Brothers Size—they exist in the same world. The three plays are all set in what McCraney calls 'the distant present,' in the fictional Louisiana bayou town of San Pere.
They share many themes, similar theatrical conventions (speaking some stage directions aloud), and characters. Yoruban mythology is woven in, and dreams seep into waking life. But the tone and intention varies between the three. 'In The Brothers Size I was trying to explore rhythms, drum-like, but in the voice. In In the Red and Brown Water I begin exploring the mixing of two stories from two different cultures—Yerma and Oba—and how they mix, and essentially how those mixtures are what make up the people in Cuba and the Spanish Caribbean, African and European Spanish,' said McCraney. 'And in Marcus; or The Secret of Sweet I explored what the absence of those direct links feels like in African-Americans today.
I haven't proved or unproved anything. Just exploring and using what I know of my life in the South in the swampy areas of the Everglades and Homestead, FL.' 'The three plays don't line up in a neat, linear way. They're less in a perfect chronology than they are 'in conversation' with each other. They reflect on each other, echo, contradict, remind. They give a sense of time—time bending and passing through generations, a community, a culture.

In strict chronological time, Red and Brown Water comes first, The Brothers Size second, and Marcus third. Yet the plays can be experienced singly or in a different order, for Tarell is not telling a dry history of a community as much as he’s inviting us to share in its experience and dreams.” —Tina Landau, who directed all three plays at Steppenwolf Theatre in 2010.
In the Red and Brown Water Oya, a promising young track star, has to choose between her dreams of escape and the reality of caring for her dying mother. She's also torn between two very different men: the one she 'should' be with, Ogun Size, and the one she's passionately drawn to, the soldier Shango.
Tina Landau, who directed all three plays at Steppenwolf in 2010, said it is 'best described as a theatrical poem.part story, part dance piece, part song. Tarell wrote the play in what he described as a 'dream state' (jet-lagged, with insomnia, etc.).'
The Brothers Size Ooshosi Size, a wandering soul recently released from prison, clashes with his straight-and-narrow mechanic brother, Ogun. Yet even as they grapple with their own notions of freedom and tradition, they remain fiercely intertwined. The play was written while Tarell was still in school at Yale, and it has a more grounded narrative than In the Red and Brown Water. Marcus; Or the Secret of Sweet Days before Hurricane Katrina, sixteen-year-old Marcus finds the currents of his life converging, launching a search for identity that has deep implications for his close-knit community. This conclusion to The Brother/Sister Plays is a coming-of-age story about a young gay man in the south.
Tina Landau said, 'Tarell found inspiration not only in the real (personal stories from him and friends, experiences in hurricane beleaguered New Orleans) but also in the fantastical: the great farces and dream plays of literature, such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, or fairy tales and fables in which people travel 'into the woods' and emerge somehow changed.'

Plot The story follows Eli and Charlie Sisters, two hitmen brothers in the pay of a wealthy man known only as the Commodore, who tasks them with killing a man named Hermann Warm. The Commodore claims that Warm stole from him and left town. Eli comments that he finds it suspicious how many people seem to steal from a dangerous man like the Commodore, but Charlie defends their employer. Warm is being tracked by John Morris, a scout also in the Commodore's employ.
Morris finds Warm traveling by wagon train south to California with the Gold Rush and befriends him. Warm complains of the difficulties involved in his trip, and Morris helps him by buying him a horse and traveling with him to Jacksonville where, unbeknownst to Warm, Morris has arranged to rendezvous with the Sisters brothers. When they arrive, Warm finds handcuffs in Morris's bags, realizes what Morris's true intentions are, and threatens Morris with a gun. However, Morris overpowers him and restrains him.
While he is tied up, Warm reveals that he is en route to California to find gold using a chemical substance of his own devising. The Sisters brothers have been sent to retrieve the formula from him, which he expects they will do by means of torture before killing him. Unable to stand the thought of allowing an innocent man to be murdered for the Commodore's profit, Morris frees Warm and leaves Jacksonville with him. On the road toward San Francisco, Warm reveals that his ultimate plan is to create a utopian society, free from greed and other social ills, in Texas. The brothers' journey to find the two men is plagued by events such as a bear attack on their camp, Eli suffering a spider bite, and Charlie repeatedly getting drunk and being too hungover to ride.
When they discover Morris's betrayal in Jacksonville, they follow the pair to Mayfield, a town named for its most prominent citizen. Mayfield herself, who owns a hotel and brothel, denies having seen Warm and Morris, but offers a warm welcome to the brothers seemingly on the basis of their reputation and that of their employer. However, Eli becomes suspicious, and he attempts to get Charlie out of the hotel. They make it to their horses before they are cornered by hitmen hired by Mayfield. The brothers kill the hitmen and interrogate Mayfield as to the whereabouts of Warm and Morris, before murdering and robbing her. In San Francisco, Charlie and Eli stay at an expensive hotel. While eating dinner, they argue about whether to continue the hunt for Warm and Morris.
Eli wants to give up and retire from their current way of living, using the money they have saved to open a store; Charlie angrily rejects this idea and hits Eli before storming out. The next day, Charlie tries to pretend nothing happened, but Eli strikes him across the face. Charlie then reveals that he had gone to the claims office and found that a claim had been staked in the name of John Morris at a location a few days' ride away. Eli agrees to complete this job as their last. On their way to the claim site, the brothers are ambushed and captured by Warm and Morris. While the latter two argue about what to do with the brothers, they in turn are attacked by mercenaries who tracked Charlie and Eli to the site. The four men team up to kill the mercenaries.
After they succeed, Charlie and Eli throw in their lot with Warm and Morris and agree to help them find gold in exchange for half the takings. The men dam up the river at the claim site to create an artificial pond and in the process develop a surprising camaraderie. Eli reveals to Warm that Charlie killed their abusive, alcoholic father when they were young, and that Charlie's short temper and violent tendencies put him in danger from 'fathers, brothers and friends' seeking revenge, so Eli reluctantly took up their present employment to help protect him. Once the dam is completed, Warm explains that when his chemical formula is poured into water, it will cause gold-bearing rock to glow brightly for a brief time.
However, the substance is extremely corrosive and even diluted, it will cause irritation to any exposed skin, so they must not spend too much time in the pond. The men put the formula into the river and gather the gold that is thus revealed. When the glow begins to fade, Charlie panics and, crazed by greed, tries to dump more of the formula in. However, he spills the undiluted substance on his own right hand.
Eli rushes out of the river to restrain Charlie, while the spilled undiluted formula badly injures Warm and Morris as they struggle getting out of the river. The latter two men are so badly hurt that the next day, Warm succumbs to his injuries and Morris shoots himself rather than continue to suffer the excruciating pain. Eli takes Charlie to the nearest town, where a doctor amputates his hand. Just as the task is completed, more mercenaries sent by the Commodore arrive and demand their surrender. Eli shoots them, and he and Charlie decide they must kill the Commodore.
They travel north again, avoiding and fighting others sent by their former employer. However, the stream of other hitmen eventually stops, to the brothers' puzzlement. When they arrive in Oregon City, the Commodore's house is draped in black. Within, they find him in a coffin, attended by undertakers who say that the brothers are the only ones to visit. Eli punches the corpse 'just to make sure', and he and Charlie leave. The brothers then travel to the home of their mother, who is initially suspicious and believes they are there seeking a hideout.
